12-25 The Fabric of Life
Solution 12 – Protect the most diverse and unique remaining natural habitats.
Solution 13 – Plan the creation of protected areas to enable ecosystems to better adapt to climate change – for example, by creating ‘corridors’ along which speciescan migrate as the world warms.
Solution 14 – Embark on the large-scale restoration of certain types of habitat, otherwise many currently protected areas will be unable to sustain their unique biodiversity into the long term.
Solution 15 – Offer support to those societies around the world who are still living sustainably.
Solution 16 – Protect what remains of natural forests around the world.
Solution 17 – Retailers should be obliged to label their goods – for example, timber products and fish – to indicate to consumers the enviornmental cost of what they are buying.
Solution 18 – Find alternatives to those natural resources, such as peat, that are not renewable.
Solution 19 – Ban the sale of wild-caught animals as pets.
Solution 20 – Enforce laws that protect endangered species, including international laws on wildlife trade.
Solution 21 – Put in place effective international agreements to stop over-fishing.
Solution 22 – Establish marine nature reserves.
Solution 23 – Address the problems caused by introduced species, which can be so damaging to native biodiversity.
Solution 24 – Carry out a full inventory of life on Earth.
Solution 25 – Implement the UN Convention on Biological Biodiversity.
