Flying-foxes love to eat the nectar, pollen and fruit of native Australian tree such as eucalypts, melaleuca, banksia, lilypilly and Moreton Bay figs. Although they do eat cultivated fruit like peaches, mangoes, pawpaw and others, they do so only when their native food is scarce. Flying-foxes generally travel from one area toi another depending on food sources. Unfortunately, with increased land clearing for farming and urban development, they have increasingly fewer areas they can travel around in, especially once native flowering and fruiting trees finish, so it becomes necessary for them to eat farm and garden fruit also sometimes. Please remember that if they are eating your fruit, it is only because their native food source if very scarce, and in the case of winter, many may actually be starving, driving them to see out our food sources also.
