Chicks are Not Toys!

What happens to the roosters?

Each year around Australia, thousands of chicks (baby chickens) are hatched in childcare centres, kindergartens, schools, aged care facilities and other organizations as part of live chick hatching programs. Approximately 50% of all chicks hatched are roosters, and therefore illegal to keep in most suburban areas. Of the thousands of roosters hatched, an extremely small percentage find long term homes. Most are killed as waste products of chick hatching programs.

These roosters put an enormous strain on animal welfare organizations, council pounds and shelters when they are  surrendered as unwanted pets. Parting with a loved family pet that will most likely be killed is heartbreaking for all involved.

CHICKS ARE NOT TOYS or disposable objects. They are living creatures that deserve our respect and require a lifetime of care and commitment.

We strongly encourage the replacement of live chick hatching programs with activities and materials, such as books, DVDs and kits that teach life cycles and inspire students and participants to appreciate, respect and learn about the amazing life of chickens and all animals.

Please help to end live chick hatching programs by sharing this info with any organization you know who participates in live chick hatching programs. It really will make a world of difference for chicks’ lives.
