How Can We Help Flying-foxes?

  • Remove cocos palms completely if you can, or at least remove their seed bunches as soon as they start to develop
  • Remove barbed wire and netting near cocos palms (it’s a good idea to remove these anyway in wildlife areas)
  • Rake up and dispose of dropped seeds so bats don’t come down to the ground to feed, risking dog attacks (there are more flying-foxes and bats killed by dog attacks than koalas)
  • If you hear birds being noisy near a cocos palm, there may be a trapped bat. Please check and report it to Bat Care Brisbane or the RSPCA immediately
  • Report all bats caught on barbed wire, in netting or caught in cocos palms
  • If you’d like to donate to a charity or worthy cause, use your money to have your cocos palms removed – you could save many flying-foxes and bats

Remember: NO PALM – NO HARM
